Heritage Days Weekend in Montgomery County

Let`s celebrate the Heritage Days in Maryland this weekend. For Au Pairs and Host Families, you never knew history could be so much fun.
Please, see below some activities in the Bethesda, Silver Spring and Glen Echo area.
1. Josiah Henson Historic Site (Uncle Tom’s Cabin)

Guided tours of the Riley farm where Josiah Henson lived and worked as a slave from 1795 to 1825. Reverend Henson’s 1849 autobiography inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe’s landmark novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Tours every half hour from noon to 3:30PM. Park at the Montgomery Aquatic Center at 5900 Executive Boulevard.

The Spanish Ballroom will be open with a display telling the story of Glen Echo Park’s history from the late 1800s to 1960. Learn the history of the ballroom, enjoy free dance lesson offered throughout the day, and tour the entire park with National Park Service staff. Special craft activities for children will be offered.
- 3. Clara Barton National Historic Site

Visit the home of the “Angel of the Battlefield - Founder of the American Red Cross”. This Victorian style historic house was Clara Barton’s home during the last 15 years of her life.
- 4. Historic Silver Spring B&O Railroad Station

Saturday only; Montgomery Preservation Inc. and the Silver Spring Historical Society present a working model railroad at the 1945 National Register Railroad Station with themed music by Rick Franklin at 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM, a talk on Silver Spring history at 2:00 PM and refreshments.
On Saturday and Sunday enjoy the exhibit, “Indelible Images - Time, Place, and Essence of Extraordinary Iconic Buildings of Silver Spring”.
- 5. Smithville Rosenwald School Museum/Education Center
Saturday only
811 E. Randolph Road, Silver Spring
Tour the historical school for African American children. Watch an historical film about the school, participate in lectures, and meet with alumni.

If you love percussion you have to see that. An all women percussion band composed by women from all over the world. Batala Washington was founded in June, 2007 and it currently has over 55 women in the band.
Please join them for free most Saturdays on their Rehearsals (take a look in their calendar).

Hi girls!
It was great seeing you all last Sunday. I hope you had a good time in our boat trip. I selected a few pictures from our meeting.
I also would like to say good bye to Melissa who is finishing the program and returning to Colombia. We wish you a great return back home, Melissa! Good luck in your new journey.
Also a quick good bye to Sarah-Lena who is moving with a new family for her second year. Sarah, it was great having you in our group and you are always welcome to join us in our next meetings.
A big welcome to Bettina who just arrived from Germany. Tina is new in the area and looking forward to meeting other au pairs. Please girls send her an email or give her a quick call!
Barbora, thanks a billion for coming all the way from Richmond just for our meeting. You are fantastic!
A big thanks also to Katya, Maria, Kullanan, Kristin and Julie who added more fun to our short trip.
